Post-Op Instructions

  • The side effects of anesthesia or sedation can last more than 24 hours, therefore you must have a responsible adult to stay with you for at least 24 hours.

  • Rest the remainder of the day.

  • Although you may feel normal, you can have dizziness, lightheadedness, or periods of sleepiness for 24 hours or longer.  After general anesthesia, it is normal to feel achy, to have sore muscles, or a sore throat for the first 24 hours.

  • Do not consume alcohol, drive, operate appliances or hazardous machinery, and/or make important personal or business decision within the first 24 hours or while taking pain medication.

  • Drink plenty of fluids and progress to your normal diet as tolerated, unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.

  • It is not uncommon to experience nausea with or without vomiting after surgery.  If you are unable to keep food or liquids down or nausea persists longer than 24 hours, please contact your surgeon’s office.  The office has the ability to prescribe medication to help with nausea and vomiting.

  • It is not uncommon to experience some bleeding after surgery.  However, if blood is coming through your dressing, apply pressure and call your surgeon’s office for further instruction.  If you feel this is an emergency, call 911, or go to the nearest Emergency Department.

  • Call your Surgeon if you experience any signs or symptoms of infection including:  redness, drainage of fluid or pus, pain, swelling, or fever greater than 100.4˚.

  • Once you are home, if you have any questions or concerns regarding your procedure or instructions please contact your surgeon’s office.
